I meant to replace the stock 12AX7 tube with a 12AY7 in a almost new Valve Jr amp. By mistake, I took out the EL84 tube and put it in the new 12AY7 slot. Of course, it didn't work. The Tung-Sol EL84/6BQ5 was a popular OEM tube for American-made EL84 /6BQ5 guitar amplifiers, such as those built by Gibson and Harmony. Due to its rugged construction and conservative ratings, it is the most reliable current production EL84 type available for use in Vox AC-30 type amplifiers.
The phase inverter was the type used by some Gibson amps where the signal from the plate of one tube stage is attenuated and fed to the grid of another tube stage. I thought that changing it to a long-tailed phase inverter would give it more gain and make it distort more easily. EL84 tubes need much less drive than 6V6 tubes, so I took the ...
5W Tube Guitar Amp, 12AX7 & EL84 SE Schematic . 5W Guitar Amp Head. 5W Tube Guitar Amplifier, 12AX7 & 6V6GT Single Ended. Almost identical circuit to the EL84 amp, except output tube is a single ended 6V6GT. Very similar to a Fender Princeton (5F2). The biggest difference is the rectifier - the schematic is drawn with a solid state diode.
